Media Studies A2- Music Video
(Full Marks A Grade) Stuck by Canopy Climbers
Mise en scene – I like the locations used in the video, the
field is good because it shows that it’s a place where the characters go to
think and reflect on their actions and it’s a good way to begin a video with an
establishing shot because it sets the scene for the video but also is a good
location to have for establishing shots. Another thing to notice about the
characters is that they are mostly wearing black, this could signify that they
all have a dark secret that they are trying to keep secret and that they are in
fear of each other through the use of the colour black. The music videos
aesthetic overall is fairly dark and suggests that it has a dark meaning and
that the things being done in the music video are dark and disturbing.
For camera angles, there seems to be a lot of close up shots
of the different characters faces, this could be used to signify their emotions
because this music video is heavily filled with emotional scenes and ideas
about how emotions effect your actions. I think it’s also being used to show us
which characters emotions are more important and which ones need to be looked
at more because they have more relevance to the story. I also like the
establishing shots of the field with the trees and the sunset in the background,
this could be used to set the scene of where the characters go to get away from
everyone else or to have fun. It could also be used to show a period of time
going by which has connections to the person’s emotions because as the time
goes by, the persons emotions begin to develop about the situation and
eventually they come to realise what they have done and why they shouldn’t have
done it.
The narrative is fairly clear, it seems like the two
character who are friends have attacked the other person for no apparent reason
and they seem to have done it because they seem like they cause trouble already
through the fact that they are doing graffiti on walls and just generally
causing trouble. It looks as if they are becoming increasingly guilty with their
actions over the course of the music video and the character who was attacked is
training to increase his strength because he doesn’t want to end up in the same
situation and be defenceless again. You can see that the boys are guilty for
their actions through the lyrics ‘I never wanted this at all’ this shows their
remorse and guilt for their actions. Another point for this is when the song
says ‘another drink of something that will kill the memories’ this is showing
that he is having to drink alcohol in order to get rid of the memories he has
of what he did which shows how guilty he is of the whole ordeal.
Overall I think there are a lot of things that went well
with this music video, I think the camera angles were brilliant and they pieced
very well with the song and the editing was good because the scenes were the
right length and I liked how smooth it flowed throughout the music video.
One thing I can take from this video is how clear the
narrative is in this video along with how good the editing and camera angles
are. The angles work really well with the narrative such as the close ups of
the characters faces to show their emotion in terms of the situation they have
got themselves in and I like how well it links.
A music video is a short film accompanied with music and imagery. They are mainly produced for promotional or artistic purposes. In modern day they are usually made to promote the album of the artist or to promote the song further. There are many cases in which a music video has been a way to promote merchandise or even a movie. Music videos have been around for a very long time but became a lot more popular when the TV channel 'MTV' aired on TV the music video titled 'video killed the radio star'. Although this was the time music videos began to become very popular, this was not the first music video. The video considered the first 'music video' was called 'St Louis Blues' by Bessie Smith. The music video involved Bessie Smith drinking and singing to the song which is considered a music video. It was released in 1914, way before music videos were even a thing. All music videos either use: Animation Live Action Filming Documentaries No...
Narrative- A lot of problems with the world are being shown in this music video, the theme is trying to point out that there is problems with the world and that they are not necessarily being acknowledged properly so this music video is trying to spread awareness. An example would be in the music video you can see a roller coaster ride meant to represent the housing market and you can see it dropping meaning that the market is failing as a whole and that it is an issue for a lot of people. Another thing that is being shown here is that it's trying to spread awareness for self expression and being yourself and this is shown through all the people walking in single file at the same speed making the same hand movements at the exact same time, this is showing that they are all the same whereas Katy Perry is doing her thing and walking around not following the crowd which means she is being herself which then goes to show she is the role model in this situation and that can encourage ...
Music video questionnaire analysis Here are some of the results that I got from the questionnaire I carried out: All the people asked were males All the people asked were under the age of 18 They all answered yes to 'do you like watching music videos' There was a fairly diverse amount of answers for what the persons favourite genre is A lot of people said they prefer narrative and performance based videos equally rather than preferring one of them Everyone who answered said they like special effects and animation From this research i can gather that i need to include both narrative and performance based factors in my music videos because that is what is more preferred than including one of them. It also shows that i have a range of skills and can include different types of music videos rather than using one.
