Katy Perry - Chained To The Rhythm

Narrative-
A lot of problems with the world are being shown in this music video, the theme is trying to point out that there is problems with the world and that they are not necessarily being acknowledged properly so this music video is trying to spread awareness. An example would be in the music video you can see a roller coaster ride meant to represent the housing market and you can see it dropping meaning that the market is failing as a whole and that it is an issue for a lot of people.  Another thing that is being shown here is that it's trying to spread awareness for self expression and being yourself and this is shown through all the people walking in single file at the same speed making the same hand movements at the exact same time, this is showing that they are all the same whereas Katy Perry is doing her thing and walking around not following the crowd which means she is being herself which then goes to show she is the role model in this situation and that can encourage the audience to want to be themselves more. The song title 'chained to the rhythm' identifies this problem because it is saying that people are 'chained' and they are on course to face these problems at some point in their life which is the 'rhythm' which is showing they are guaranteed to be thrown into a situation.

Representation-
There are a lot of representations in this music video and one of them is gender, we can see this through the roller coaster ride that Katy Perry gets on. There are two rows of seats, one of the marked with blue heart and the other marked with a pink heart, implying that one row is for boys and one row is for girls and its trying to address the gender situation we have today where gender roles are being broke and some people still don't seem to understand this and still think girls and boys should still stick to their 'stereotypical' roles. Katy Perry in this music video, has been purposely dressed differently from everyone else in order to stand out and make it look like she is being herself which is then going to make her look like the role model in order for the audience to like her more and then be encouraged to be themselves as well.

Setting-
The music video is set in a theme park. which has connotations of enjoyment and having fun, this is contrasting against the lyrics and the whole narrative of the song which is addressing world issues so there is a strong contrast between the setting and the narrative. A theme park might have been used because the vast majority of people who go to theme parks are young people so having the setting somewhere in which young people are heavily drawn to is a very good way to increase their interest in the music video which can go a long way because then they can get the message of the music video and apply it to their everyday life.

Audience-
The music video i think is aimed at young adults and there is a number of things that can show this, one of them is the fact that the setting for the music video is a theme park, this is a place where the majority of young people go to and it would attract the target audience if your setting was somewhere that their age group enjoys going to. Another thing that shows the target audience is how some of the people are taking selfies with their mobile phones, this is clearly aimed at young people because most people who are young adults have the newest mobile phones and take lots of photos with them so it would attract them because it is something that they do on a regular basis.

This music video will help me because there are a lot of hidden meanings within this music video and it's good for the narrative to have hidden meanings that get the audience thinking which is good to add to a music video in order to make it look good and get higher marks.
