Plan B - Writings On The Wall Textual Analysis

Mise-
The narrative is about a singer in a band having a one night stand with someone and therefore resulting in him being a cheater. In the music video he is wearing a grey suit and the colour grey can have connotations of being emotionless so we can see that the main character in the music video is emotionless or emotionless for other people which explains why he is cheating on his partner. To further this point you can see this contrasts with his partner because she is wearing a yellow shirt which has connotations of joy and happiness which suggests she is loyal to him which is also shown when she is preparing him dinner waiting for him to come home. So we can see there is a clear contrast between then two lovers, one is emotionless and disloyal whereas the other is happy and loyal to their partner. Further on in the music video you can see the main character wearing a black suit which is suggesting his mood has changed/increased because grey is not as harsh of a colour as black so we can see his feelings of disloyalty and evilness are increasing and that can show that he is going to do something bad soon.

Camera Angles-
There are a lot of close up shots in the music video but the ones that stick out are the close ups of the food being cooked, it shows them being boiled up close with the things bubbling and this could suggest that the tension between the two lovers is rising and that if it isn't fixed, things might explode and they could end up in a terrible situation which is represented by the close ups of the food being cooked. Then we have a long shot of the partner being burnt by the pan that she is using to cook with, this could have interesting connotations of her being burnt by the relationship because of what her partner is doing or it could be a warning to say 'something bad is going to happen very soon' and the burn could suggest the pain that she is going to endure when she finds out what he has done to her.

Editing -
In this music video, the two lovers have the most prevalence out of everyone else who appears in the video this is telling us that they are the main characters and that this music video revolves around their relationship and that their relationship is what the whole story is about. Another thing to add would be the pace of all the shots, they are quite fast paced which could suggest that the main character is rushing into things without thinking about the consequences of his actions, this could be suggesting what he is going to do further into the music video because of the fast pace of the cuts.

Sound-
One thing that can back up the narrative of the song is the lyrics, in the beginning we hear Plan B sing 'we used to have fun, now all we do is fight' this could be suggesting that he is sick and tired of them fighting all the time which would suggest that he no longer wants to be with her. This may have been the reason that he went out and cheated on his partner with someone else because he cant take the constant fighting and arguing that he has with her. Another thing that backs up this point is when he says 'we aint over but the writings on the wall' this could suggest that they havent broken up just yet but it's clear to see that they are not going to work out and that they will eventually break up as a result of their constant fighting. So to him it is blatantly obvious that they are not meant to be together because its 'written all over the wall' which means that they'll see it no matter what they try to do to hide it.

This music video has helped me because there are a lot of good camera angles which we could use along with how good the narrative is which is similar to our story in terms of a broken relationship and knowing that two people are not meant to be together. This music video will help because its the perfect example of a music video that has a good narrative.
