The purpose of a music video

The purpose of a music video could be to:

  •  sell the song, to make it more popular than it is already and to create a reaction from the audience so they will remember it
  • to give the listener a better idea of what the song means or what kind of message the artist is trying to get across
  • to entertain the audience, this kind of music video would typically involve dancing or acting
  • to sell and promote the album that the song is apart of, the music video will create a memorable vision of the song in the viewers head which can increase chances of the song being sold to them or them going out and buying it
  • performance based music videos are typically used to promote and entertain the audience because in most performance based music videos there is not a whole lot of meaning behind it
An example of a music video that has a bigger meaning and is trying to spread a message is 'where is the love' by Black Eye Peas. This is because they are trying to end violence and racism by using it in their music video with the question mark throughout the music video which is asking 'where is the love for each other?'

This will help when making our music video because it gives us a better idea of why we are making a music video and what direction we can take in terms of having a strong narrative or more performance based elements in our music video.
