Music Video Audiences

A music video needs to be entertaining and interesting in order for it to attract a target audience and certain genres attract a certain group of people. This is called demographics, this is a set amount of characteristics that a certain group of people fit to in order for them to be in the category. In this case it would be the specific group of people who will watch a specific music video. For the demographics you have to consider things like:

  • Age 
  • Gender 
  • Class 
  • Sexuality 
  • Ethnicity 
When thinking about the target audience you need to also consider things like the genre of the music, what group of people are going to watch this specific genre of music.

Certain artists will promote themselves in different ways so for example, if the artist was trying to appeal to a younger audience they would promote their music on social media platforms such as snap chat or twitter because the majority of people on social media are young and would be attracted to that kind of thing because its what is popular and what everyone uses. On the other hand if it was trying to attract an older audience they might promote themselves on something like TV because more old people watch TV nowadays compared to younger people so that is where you would promote your music videos.

An example would be that the certain demographic for people who watch grime would mainly be young males who live in more urban environments because thats where the grime genre comes from and the class would either be middle or lower because a lot of the grime artists have come from working class backgrounds so they would relate to the same type of people more than any others.

This will help me when making my music video because it is going to give me a better idea of who is going to be our target audience and it gives me more detail and info on what types of things to consider when trying to find out what my target audience is going to be

Narrative- A lot of problems with the world are being shown in this music video, the theme is trying to point out that there is problems with the world and that they are not necessarily being acknowledged properly so this music video is trying to spread awareness. An example would be in the music video you can see a roller coaster ride meant to represent the housing market and you can see it dropping meaning that the market is failing as a whole and that it is an issue for a lot of people.  Another thing that is being shown here is that it's trying to spread awareness for self expression and being yourself and this is shown through all the people walking in single file at the same speed making the same hand movements at the exact same time, this is showing that they are all the same whereas Katy Perry is doing her thing and walking around not following the crowd which means she is being herself which then goes to show she is the role model in this situation and that can encourage

Audience Questionnaire Analysis

Music video questionnaire analysis Here are some of the results that I got from the questionnaire I carried out: All the people asked were males  All the people asked were under the age of 18  They all answered yes to 'do you like watching music videos'  There was a fairly diverse amount of answers for what the persons favourite genre is  A lot of people said they prefer narrative and performance based videos equally rather than preferring one of them Everyone who answered said they like special effects and animation  From this research i can gather that i need to include both narrative and performance based factors in my music videos because that is what is more preferred than including one of them. It also shows that i have a range of skills and can include different types of music videos rather than using one.

Viral Music Videos

The definition of viral in terms of an image or a video is something that rapidly circulates the internet from user to user in a matter of days. Chocolate rain is a viral song that was released in 2007 by a person called Tay Zonday and it has been viewed over 114 million times on YouTube. It was ranked the hottest viral video in 2007 and was given a YouTube award in 2008 under the music category. The music video simply involved Tay Zonday standing in a room singing into a microphone. One thing that made it viral was when Tay would move away from the mic to breathe in because he held his breath when singing, this led to this segment of the video being parodied. The show became so popular that it led to being performed by Tay Zonday on the Jimmy Kimmel Show. It even blew up to the point where it was mentioned in an episode of South Park along with the Office.
