Plans for Magazine Advert

Image
I like this one because of the connotations of the bonfire in the middle of the page with the smoke going through the lettering. It links the title of the song with the bonfire which is connoting the relationship of the couple who's relationship is the fire and its being burnt until there is nothing left. The lettering is pretty basic which is okay for indie music but i would have preferred to make something thats rougher and looks gritty in comparison to this font which is fairly sharp and not really that exciting or relating to the genre. I did like how the name of the band was in the middle and the title of the song surrounded the band name which i think is something that could be added to our final magazine advert because when the band name is in the middle its the first thing someone sees and it will intrigue them and make them interested especially if they are long term fans of the band.  I like the lettering on this one because it pretty much resembles the Bastille logo w

Plans for digipack

Image
For the digipak we may want consider that we have to relate the images and other things to the actual music video we've made otherwise there will be no link to the music video and promotional items and that will mean less marks. The things that work in this digipak is the images of the flames and the bonfire on the front cover, this is because it relates a lot to our music video which is 'things we lost in the fire' so it has connotations of the title but also links to the meaning of our music video which is a 'burning' relationship and we are having real fires in the music video to symbolise the relationship. I also like how i put the artists names on the back of the album cover in order for newer fans to get to know the band and know the names if they wanted to. Im not sure the font works too well because it doesnt look indie enough for the band which are heavily indie. For this digipak i really like the font thats being used, this is because it looks almost

Why we are re-making a music video

Image
At the beginning of the year we were asked to recreate a music video which was Justin Timberlake's 'Cant Stop The Feeling'. We were put into groups and we asked to recreate a small segment of the music and then the whole music video would come together with each groups segment. The thing we learned from this was how to recreate a music video and look at specific things from the video and we had to work together as a team in order to be able to re create them perfectly. It taught us how music videos worked and it will prepare us for when we make our final one which is good because we will have experience before we've even done it so we can make our final video as good as it can possibly be. I think it will help when making our music video because it gives us experience in the making of music videos that we need for our final video and it also helps us to be able to understand how music videos are made and what it takes in order for a successful one to be made.

David Guetta Textual Analysis

Image
David Guetta Textual Analysis Narrative: From the narrative and looking at the music video we can see that there are a lot of intertextuality and its mostly referring to 80s type sci-fi movies. The references tie in with Steven Spielberg’s movies mainly from the 80s with films like ET, Back to the future and the Goonies. This can be shown from the whole narrative, the young child in the music video has been given super powers and is coming to grips with having these types of abilities which is the main story to a lot of old Spielberg movies. It seems that the reoccurring thing in films like the ones stated are that these huge responsibilities are being given to children rather than adults which is something that was never really seen before, this can be shown in the music video because in the beginning he runs away from school because he hasn’t been able to control his powers and has destroyed one of the corridors with dust and rubble everywhere. He then goes home where you can s

This digipak is very interesting because there are a lot of mysterious imagery on here that gets the audience thinking a lot. The car on the front looks quite old and beaten up which fits to the genres generic conventions so when people who like this specific genre see this album cover it will encourage them and make them want to give the album a chance because the images are appealing to them. The image on the back is intriguing because the people almost look as if they are silhouettes so it looks very mysterious and gets the audience thinking and asking questions such as 'who are these people and what relevance do they have to the band or the album?'. Having things like this encourage the audience to use their imagination more which sparks more curiosity which can help them to buy the album. It also links to the genre because a generic convention of the indie rock genre is that they tend to have heavily narrative based music videos and imagery. I like the font style becaus

Analysis of Ancillary Products

Image
Things i like about this magazine advert is the photo in the background, the setting is much like a indie rock setting and it fits the conventions because most indie rock settings are fairly vague and low budgey. The car also looks beaten up and old which also links to the genre because the clothes and other things in indie music videos are old and low budget which fits to the genre perfectly. The colours are fairly vague too except the blood which sticks out a lot which links to the name of the song which is bad blood so there is a good connotation there. It could also get audiences thinking and could have a mysterious feel to it such as 'who's blood is it?' 'where is the blood leading to?' there could be a story behind it and the audience will be intrigued by it.  I like the font style because it's a reoccurring thing with the band which will draw the fans in and make them interested because when they see that font style they'll realise that its Bastil

Research into chosen artist

Bastille are a british indie rock band that formed in 2010. The name of the band comes from 'Bastille day' which is the French national day and is one the same day as the bands lead singer Dan Smith. After releasing singles and a debut ep they were eventually signed by Virgin records and released their debut album 'Bad Blood' in 2013. The band has been nominated for four Brit awards and as of November 2014 they've sold more than 5 million records in the USA and 2.5 million in the United Kingdom. They then released their second studio album 'Wild World' in 2016. From having a look at their album covers, i can see that all of them seem to look fairly similar, they all have the same font and include fairly similar images such as a person standing or a shot of a city. although their album covers look fairly similar, it could be making them look original by creating their own aesthetic and style because they've used it for so long, so if anyone were t

Research into chosen genre

Image
Indie rock is a genre of alternative rock that emerged into the industry during the 1980s and is mainly in the United States and United Kingdom. The term indie actually means independent and has changed a lot over the years. For indie, the generic conventions are generally the music videos are quite low budget. This means that the camera quality wont be amazing and the settings are pretty average such as cities, parks or tunnels. The settings are kept this simple so that the attention can be put onto the band/performers.    Mise en scene is also important for indie songs because it helps portray the narrative much better. Indie artists often have a retro look towards them which can be seen through what they are wearing and their makeup. They also have additional actors/actresses in the video and they are often the main character for the narrative of the music video. Costumes would give them different identities making it easier for them to be set apart from everyone else. The props

The Importance of Lyrics

Image
For this task we were asked to look at some song lyrics to a music video we had never seen and try and come up with a music video pitch for the lyrics. As you can see i have looked at each line and analysed it by coming up with different ideas for the music video. I think this helped us because it made us think more about what types of things we could put in the music video and by not having us watch the music video, there was no chance we could copy the music video and therefore we had better imagination and came up with better ideas than we would have if we had seen the music video already. It will help me when making my music video because it helps me widen my imagination and helps me take things from a different perspective which is looking at the lyrics instead of just watching a music video and copying things from that.

Initial Ideas

Image
At first i thought it would be a good idea to do a rap song, although when analysing a lot of rap songs we saw most of the general conventions were expensive cars, expensive jewellery and expensive clothing. We had none of those nor could we get any of that before the filming date. So we decided to look at something else and ended up having a look at Bastille. The song we decided to do was 'Things we lost in the fire' and we liked this because there are a lot of things we could create in the music video that would have good connotations and it was easy to construct a good story from. It also worked in our favour because we had a lot to work with in terms of making the digipak and making the magazine advert. The advertisement that Bastille had already done for this song was some good inspiration for us and it was also something very simple but had a lot of meaning, this is something we want to do with our digipak and magazine advert because less is more with things like this.

Analysis of a digipak

Image
The fonts used in this digipak are quite silly and bold, showing that the people that are being targeted for this album are younger people or the younger generation because the font isn't exactly neat or posh written so it would attract a younger audience. It even shows this through the name of the album which is 'teenage dream'. This is definitely trying to attract a younger audience because it has the word 'teenage' in it, meaning that the people that this album is for is young people. I like the colours used because it is showing a sort of childish side to the artist which is good to attracting the target audience it is going for because obviously teenagers are more childish than adults so therefore, the colours have to be bright and vibrant in order for the target audience to be attracted. If it was trying to attract an older audience it would have been using dull colours such as brown or black. I like how most of the background colours are pink and red and

Purpose Of Magazine Adverts And Digipaks

Image
The purpose of magazine adverts are for the artist to get noticed by a bigger group of people and it's also good promotion for their upcoming album or single that could be close to releasing. It's even better if it's on the front cover because you don't even have to buy the magazine, you could just walk past it and see it and then become interested and want to know more. This is great promotion for artists because it gets their name spoken about even with people who might not even enjoy their music or might not enjoy that genre. It shows they're the most important one if they are on the front cover. On the other hand, if the magazine was targeted to a specific genre then it would definitely attract more people because they are drawn to that genre which means the artist is attracting people from the genre that they music for. The purpose of a digipak is to promote the album but is also used to make the album seem more eye catching by adding extra things such as p

Katy Perry - Chained To The Rhythm

Image
Narrative- A lot of problems with the world are being shown in this music video, the theme is trying to point out that there is problems with the world and that they are not necessarily being acknowledged properly so this music video is trying to spread awareness. An example would be in the music video you can see a roller coaster ride meant to represent the housing market and you can see it dropping meaning that the market is failing as a whole and that it is an issue for a lot of people.  Another thing that is being shown here is that it's trying to spread awareness for self expression and being yourself and this is shown through all the people walking in single file at the same speed making the same hand movements at the exact same time, this is showing that they are all the same whereas Katy Perry is doing her thing and walking around not following the crowd which means she is being herself which then goes to show she is the role model in this situation and that can encourage

What makes a good student music video

In order to make a good student music video, you should not reinvent the wheel and by that you should not create something entirely original because you dont know whether it is actually going to be successful or not so try and do something that has already been done but just change it up slightly to show you have original ideas. For mise have some good props in order to make it as realistic as possible so for example, if you're music video's sole narrative is about Polaroid photos, actually go and get a real Polaroid rather than making it by painting a piece of paper black. I would also suggest you pick a good location for your music video because the setting has to have some sort of connotation with the music video, so if you're music video was about a person being lost it could be in a field because fields are big and easy to get lost in, or you could choose a forest which are even harder to get lost in and it's good because it adds good tension to the music video a

Music Video Audiences

A music video needs to be entertaining and interesting in order for it to attract a target audience and certain genres attract a certain group of people. This is called demographics, this is a set amount of characteristics that a certain group of people fit to in order for them to be in the category. In this case it would be the specific group of people who will watch a specific music video. For the demographics you have to consider things like: Age  Gender  Class  Sexuality  Ethnicity  When thinking about the target audience you need to also consider things like the genre of the music, what group of people are going to watch this specific genre of music. Certain artists will promote themselves in different ways so for example, if the artist was trying to appeal to a younger audience they would promote their music on social media platforms such as snap chat or twitter because the majority of people on social media are young and would be attracted to that kind of thing becaus

Mock Digipak

Image
We were assigned to create a mock digipak for a band that was chosen for us and we had to take the genre and apply it to the digipak. For me i was given a reggae duo called & Nate. I then started looking at generic conventions found in reggae art and music and found that the colours red, green and yellow were reoccurring colours that appear a lot in the art style for reggae music. I used this and added it to the digipak as much as i could in order for it to be as generic as possible. I added the palm trees in order to give it more of the Jamaican feel because palm trees are all over Jamaica and it would give it a good feel to the digipak. I also added to pictures of the artists because i feel that it would not be as good if the artists weren't on the album. The album track list relates to a lot of reggae music because most reggae music is about peace and positivity so i decided to give it some positive track names in order to fit the genre as much as possible. This has helpe

Mock Magazine Advert

Image
An an activity to prepare for the coursework, we were asked to create a mock magazine advert for a artist that was given to us and we had to relate the advert to the genre and the artist. This task was fairly easy because it was easy to find the general conventions of specific genres and apply them to a magazine advert. For my magazine advert i was given a country duo called Billy & Jane. To make it as generic as possible i had a look at different country artists to see what type of clothes they wore and what kind of environment they are typically in. I found that most country music videos are either in a barn, a canyon or a small desert in places down south in the USA so that is why i chose the canyon for the background. I decided to use this picture because it was a couple, which it needed to be and they were wearing the generic type of clothes that country singers wear which is shirts, leather and hats. You can clearly see that these aspects are shown in this magazine article th
